Thomas Menino

Former Boston, MA mayor, Thomas Menino, has succumb to cancer today, October 30, 2014. Menino, who has been the mayor of the city of Boston for the past  twenty one (21) years, announced in March 2014 that he had diagnosed with an advanced form of cancer that had spread to his liver and lymph nodes. Upon diagnosis, Menino is quoted saying “What I don’t want is people feeling sorry for me. I don’t want sympathy. There are people worse off than me.” He immediately began an intensive chemotherapy treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

After retiring from office this year, Menino continued his work at Boston University and began a book tour this month. On October 23, 2014, Menino made the announcement that he had made the decision to halt all cancer treatments and book tour. “I am hopeful and optimistic that one day the talented researchers, doctors and medical professionals in this city will find a cure for this awful disease,” he said. Menino is known to have battled numerous ailments, that led to several hospital stays, since taking office.

A life-long Hyde Park resident, Menino was the city’s first Italian-American mayor, where he  won the 1994 election. Menino retired from office this year after saying he no longer had the stamina to be mayor. He was elected mayor of Bostons five consecutive times, and was elected city councilor five times before.

Thomas Menino is survived by his wife, Angela Faletra, two children, Susan and Thomas Jr.; and six grandchildren.
