Zoe Saldana To Play Icon Nina Simone?!?!?
Hollywood is known to have great actresses play musical icons in their biographies. Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn in The Coal Miner’s Daughter and Angela Basset as Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do With It. But does Hollywood just pick any actress to play African American singer’s? Well it seems they do with this new movie that is about to happen with the story of Nina Simone. Zoe Saldana is casted to play the late singer in her biography. Well, the Internet has been in an uproar of Saldana playing the late singer. Being that Nina Simone was Dark Skinned and wore natural hair, these are the factors that Zoe Saldana des not represent. But this also opens the forum of Hollywood not letting dark skin actresses play in movies, especially for people who represents us.
Black actresses especially dark skin actresses, have a hard time getting work in Hollywood. Whenever there is a role for an African American role, the girls are usually light skin or of mixed race. Productions that have African American production do the same thing. For example, the role of New-New qas played by Lauren London, who happens to be light skinned. As her best friends who were ghetto and loud were brown skinned. For years, Hollywood had defined black beauty as being fair skinned. So why cast Zoe Saldana a Latina who does not have the same features as Nina Simone be casted? It makes people wonder if they just put Zoe Saldana because she is a minority? Well, production is starting October, let’s see if this petition will reach the director and producers of the movie.
